P.S. I Love You

Cover Image This is my new favorite book, I really don't know why I didn't read it sooner. To be honest I don't know what made me pick it up in the first place. Maybe it was because I was alone on Valentine's and needed a love story that was sad and yet better than my own. Whatever the reason was for buying it, I'm glad I did. I was sucked in from page 1 and couldn't put it down. Of course I had to because of work and sleep and such, but I easily could have read it in a day. The way it is writen, with care and love on every page made me crave for more. I kind of felt like I knew exactly how the main character Holly was feeling, as if I had been there myself. The thought of losing someone you love when you are so young is heartbreaking, and then finding out that this person is making sure that you still live your life after they are gone is romantic. Holly's husband Gerry dies from a brain tumor. Before he died, he had written 10 notes to her and made sure that after he was gone, she got them and told her to open one note for each month after he had passed. Each note had a chore for her to do, something that will bring her back to life and not sitting home alone crying everyday. With each chapter I was eager to read what new little task he had for her. And was sad to know that it would have to end. Once the last note is opened, that's that. No more cute little Gerry words. It was almost like I knew the guy and had lost him as well. It really was a great read. I really wanted to see the movie, until I watched the trailer and could tell that it was not exactly like the book, and I felt that the only way to fully capture the magic of this novel, you'd have to make the film exact. So I think I'll pass on the movie. Great read, loved it, makes me wish I had a sexy romantic man like that.

Sex And The City

Cover Image The author of this book has a new show coming out based on her book Lipstick Jungle and I kept seeing ads for it and wanted to read it, but my sister had this book on her shelft so I read it instead. We've all seen the show, and if you haven't then you must live in a cave. The show is addicting, and so was reading this book. It's a quick read and I just wanted to read it non-stop, but being sick only aloud for a few chapters a night. There are things from this book that you recongize from the show, but I felt like the characters were different, even though they were supposed to be based on them. I kinda felt like none of the characters really had a personality, so you can't really relate to anyone. It also made me really wonder about the world of dating. Why do people date? Do people even really like the person they are dating? If you have no desire to get married should you date? Because don't most people date in order to find someone they love and can spend the rest of their life with? We all want to have someone in our life, but maybe we don't need them. Ponder that for a moment.

Flowers In The Attic

FLOWERS IN THE ATTICI've heard about this book, but never had read it until one of my co-workers told another co-worker about it, and then she lent it to me. When a book is being passed around, then that's a sign that I should read it. It's a very interesting, and disturbing story. A mother locks her 4 kids up in an attic/bedroom at her mother's house, promising them that once her evil father dies that she will set them free. 3 years go by in the attic, the kids grow and learn about themselves and each other, until one day they finally break free. Why they waited 3 years to break free I don't know, but they did. Maybe it was because they finally learned the their mother had lied to them about everything, and she herself just took off without them. It's very twisted and very well written. It's was a good book, just a little to dark for me.

Sleeping With Beauty

Cover ImageAfter reading Wicked, I was in a fairy tale mood and picked up what I thought would be a chick lit version of Sleeping Beauty, which is my favorite Disney movie. I was wrong. This book seemed more like Cinderella meets the Ugly Duckling. Its a story about a plain Jane who is going to her 10 year high school reunion and doesn't want to go back look like herself, so she goes to Beauty Bootcamp, where the 3 fairy godmothers turn her into a swan. Her long-time guy friend, who (surprise) has a crush on her doesn't like the new her, because now that means she's actually getting dates. It was about 100 pages to long and very predictable. It made me realize that I need to stop reading chick lit books, they are going to turn my head into mush. The only part that I did like was when she got her 'Sleeping Beauty kiss' and woke up and realized that her guy friend was her Prince Charming all along. It makes me want a 'Sleeping Beauty kiss'. Where's my Prince Charming?

Wicked

Cover Image I tried super hard to finish reading this before the New Year, but it just wasn't as interesting as I thought it would be. And when a book doesn't keep your attention for the full 500+ pages, its hard to focus on it. This is suppose to be a story based on the life of the Wicked Witch of The West from the Wizard of Oz, and even though there are some good parts to it, mostly it was just boring. I was very confused on the year in which it was suppose to take place, seeing as how the author just kind of created his own time. And she didn't even really become evil up until she has her run in with Dorothy. Maybe the Broadway play is better.

Bitter Is The New Black

The next time you think that you are a snobby bitch, read this. This is a memoir following the author's life from riches to rags. Based on I'm assuming her real life, Jen was a Vice President at some dotcom place who was rude to everyone and spent more money than she had, as all chick lit girls to. Just for once, I'd like someone to actually not be some shopaholic and actually save their money. Every chick lit book I have read has the same main character and to read that this girl was the same, made me a little mad. Goodness woman, you aren't fiction, so why not make yourself look a little better. You seem to have the education and the smarts, so why dumb yourself down to acting like all the other air-head chick lit girls out there. What worries me the most, is that maybe all us woman are really like this. The flakey, shopaholics who just want a great pair of shoes and a hot guy. I really hope not. Anyway, at the start of the book she's bitchy, rich, and way into herself. Then karma comes along and she loses her job, and can't find another. Slowly one bad thing turns into more. Soon, both she and her husband (even the bitchy people get married, and I'm still single. What?!) are out of jobs and have to move to the 'ghetto' of Chicago and sell their cars to get by. She was unemployed for like 2+ years and it took her up to a year to actually look into a temp agency, and another year to even consider retail. Ok, I know to an ex-VP of a big wig company that may seem like the end, but to the rest of the world, if you need work bad enough, you don't wait 2 years to go to a temp. In the end her hubby (who seems like a nice guy) got a job and she got a book contract. Wanna take a guess on how she did that? She made her own website and blog and people read it and thought she was funny. I have a blog, and no one has ever offered me a book deal. I guess I'm not bitchy or poor enough. It was an interesting read, kept me wanting to read it. So, she can clearly tell a story, but really, next time someone calls you a bitch or a snob, have them read one chapter from this book and they will think differently.

Skipping Christmas

Cover ImageI thought that I had written a blog about this book before, but I'm not sure, so you get another one. I love this book. Read it every year. It's about a man who's daughter joined the Peace Corps so she wont be home for Christmas so he gets the idea to just skip the whole thing and spend the money that he and his wife would've used on decorations, presents, parties, etc and take a cruise. Everyone thinks his crazy. You can't skip Christmas. Or can you? It's a quick little jolly read that I would gladly give everyone as a present. So watch out Elisa, you might get a copy. :o)
